Artists in the Islamic world have long been inspired by their faith, with a deep sense of spirituality infusing their creations. Historic Islamic artists, such as Al-Farabi, Ibn Sina, and Ibn al-Haytham, made significant contributions to various artistic disciplines while advancing knowledge in fields like science, mathematics, and philosophy. Their works continue to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide, showcasing the timeless beauty and creativity of Islamic art.

Doors and doorways play a significant role in Islamic art, embodying both practical functionality and profound symbolism. Throughout history, Islamic architecture has showcased the importance of doorways as portals to sacred spaces and transitions from the mundane to the spiritual realm. These doorways often feature intricate designs, calligraphy, and geometric patterns. Arabic calligraphy, such as Quranic verses or blessings, adorns the doors, highlighting their sacred nature. Examples of this can be seen in structures like the Gate of Paradise in the Great Mosque of Cordoba, Spain, with its exquisite metalwork and geometric patterns. Doorways in Islamic art also represent the diverse regional influences, such as the horseshoe arches of Moorish architecture in Spain or the muqarnas decoration in Persian and Central Asian doorways. Beyond their symbolic significance, doors serve practical purposes of security and privacy, demonstrating the fusion of functionality and artistic expression in Islamic culture and architecture.

The event will be taking place at the Eckhardt Hall of Winnipeg Art Gallery located at 300 Memorial Blvd, Winnipeg, MB R3C 1V1.
